Call to make Tamil compulsory subject for Indian students
Call to make Tamil compulsory subject for Indian students
"KUALA LUMPUR (March 25, 2012): Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz today proposed that Tamil be made a compulsory subject for Indian students in national schools to prevent erosion of the language in the younger generation. He said this would ensure that they will not only be able to speak in the language but also read Tamil publications as well. At present, Tamil students can only speak in their mother tongue but cannot read in that language, he said, adding that this indirectly had an influence on the publication of works in Tamil. "This issue should be given consideration or it will be difficult to address the shortage of works in Tamil," he told reporters after closing the "Mari Membaca 1Malaysia: Ore Malaysia Vaasika Vaarunggal" reading programme, here."

Indian student Rajesh Kumar jailed for Curtin University English test bribes
Indian student Rajesh Kumar jailed for Curtin University English test bribes
"AN Indian student has been jailed for 14 months for his part in a bribery scheme at Perth's Curtin University. The scheme falsified official English test scores used for granting Australian permanent residency and visas. Rajesh Kumar was sentenced in the West Australian District Court on Monday, after pleading guilty to 10 counts of bribery between November 2009 and June 2010.
Nine other people have been convicted and sentenced in relation to the bribery scheme, after the state's Corruption and Crime Commission charged 12 people with a total of 73 offences. The court heard that Kumar became an intermediary in the scheme, personally receiving between $32,000 and $44,000 for his part, after initially paying to have his own International English Testing System (IELTS) results falsified by Kok Keith Low, a Curtin University English Language Centre employee." Strike threat: Air India says there will be no disruption of flights
"Faced with a strike threat from a section of pilots from April 2, Air India on Sunday claimed there will be no disruption in operations even as its largest union, ACEU, distanced itself from the agitation. The airlines came out with a statement, saying "there is no threat of any strike from any of the registered unions of Air India employees and all its operations will be normal". In a breather to the debt-laden national carrier, the Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU), which has the backing of 12 associations and union of the airlines, issued a separate statement saying it has not given any strike notice of its members including ground staff, cabin crew and other categories and that the operations will be smooth."

Govt media managers rue hurdles in salary hike
Govt media managers rue hurdles in salary hike
"As the government's communication specialists, they hook poor Indians on to a raft of welfare measures, such as tempting children to school with a humble bait: a free meal. In other instances, they could be advising farmers on soft government loans.
These employees are the officialdom's equivalent of campaign managers of the high-paying and glossy PR world. Working mostly behind-the-scenes, they have an all-important mandate — keeping ordinary Indians posted on government programmes through campaigns, such as the flagship Bharat Nirman (nation-building).
Yet, these foot soldiers of the Indian Information Service continue to miss out on better pay and entitlements, despite a decision to merge the grade III and grade IV categories of the employees, according to a reply in Parliament on March 20." 'via Blog this'

'India has very tight system to protect N-assets':
"New Delhi, March 25: India has a "very tight sytem" in place to protect its nuclear assets and there is no need to augment this with a specialised force, official sources said Saturday. At the same time, the security of Pakistan's nuclear assets is a matter of concern, they added.
"We have a very tight system in place. Therefore, please don't assume what you don't know doesn't exist," the sources said in response to a question whether the government was mulling a specialised Nuclear Security Force as the Central Industrial Security Force, which currently guards civilian nuclear assets was stretched thin due to the diverse tasks it has to perform.
"Our material is very secure. You can take it from me that we are very, very tight," the sources said" 'via Blog this'

Visa curbs: US, Indian IT firms seek US president Barack Obama's help
Visa curbs: US, Indian IT firms seek US president Barack Obama's help
"WASHINGTON: India's IT majors and their US clients and collaborators, including several large US corporations, have taken complaints about increasingly restrictive US visa policies to president Barack Obama, seeking his intervention to overcome curbs on incoming professional personnel from India.
At the heart of the grievance from companies in both countries is the "unprecedented delays and uncertainty" that US immigration authorities are creating around L-1 visas, which are used for intra-company transfers of employees from foreign offices to US offices. The companies say US immigration authorities are exceeding the law and misinterpreting rules in rejecting L-1 visa, affecting operations."

Going global: Chinese firms hiring more Indians
Going global: Chinese firms hiring more Indians
"It’s not quite the Chinese way of doing things, but localisation seems to be the mantra among big Chinese firms setting shops here—with an eye on expanding Indian market. Shanghai Electric Corporation, the biggest Chinese power company that has recently announced its Indian subsidiary, is set to recruit over 90% of its staffs from India. The telecom major Huawei, which runs its biggest Research Office outside China, has 2000 Indian employees at its Bangalore office that began operations in 1998.
The firm says 98% of its staff is Indian. Recruiting locals seem to be helping these firms in more ways than one. First, it easily addresses the complex visa regimes between the two countries. Besides creating employment opportunities for Indians, the firms also benefit from the Indian talent pool in terms of their R&D skills.
Chinese firms are also eyeing the expanding Indian markets. “India is a major future market for us. And we plans to have more than 90% of the staffs from India,” says president of Shanghai Electric Group " 'via Blog this'
