US visa norms ease for Indian tourists, students
US visa norms ease for Indian tourists, students - The Times of India:
"NEW DELHI: Indians renewing visas to the US within four years will be exempted from a personal interview. Announcing this here on Wednesday, assistant secretary of state for consular affairs Janice Jacobs said the new rules would apply to visa categories B1, B2, C and D. Jacobs, who is here for the US-India consular dialogue, is likely to face New Delhi's concern about the growing rate of rejection of Indian work visas by the US.
"This new programme will permit consular officers to waive interviews for some qualified applicants who are renewing their visa within 48 months or four years, of expiration of their previous visa and within the same classification as the previous visa," Jacobs said. She clarified that these new rules would apply "for tourists, business travelers, crew members and for students." "Beginning today, our consulates in India are introducing a new programme to streamline the visa renewal process. Over time, this programme has the potential to benefit hundreds of thousands of visa applicants here in India," she said." 'via Blog this'

The Hindu : States / Tamil Nadu : Medical students boycott counselling:
"Postgraduate diploma doctors on Wednesday boycotted counselling, alleging lack of transparency in the vacancy list issued by the Directorate of Medical Services. The PG diploma students, who had earlier served in various government hospitals and primary health centres, had taken the required entrance examination for counselling and were called for the same. However, most of the students waiting for counselling at the Directorate of Medical Education (DME)'s office in Kilpauk were in for a shock as they were not given the full list of vacancies in the State-run hospitals. Students said that in the past five years, the lack of transparency in vacancy had become more serious.
The graduates had taken up PG diploma courses in specialties such as anaesthesia, paediatrics, ENT and ophthalmology after several years of service in primary health centres and peripheral hospitals. According to them, there were 30 vacancies in paediatrics, but only 17 had found place in the list. Similarly, vacancies in anaesthesia in various GHs were not listed."

Metrics Show Surge in Google Chrome Use on Weekends - Digits - WSJ
Metrics Show Surge in Google Chrome Use on Weekends - Digits - WSJ:
"In the Web browser wars, Google’s Chrome is slowly chipping away at market share held by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, especially when it comes to weekend use. Data from web analytics firm StatCounter highlight how global use of Chrome spikes on the weekend at the expense of IE. StatCounter tallies page views of websites in different browsers and then shows the percentage of views from each browser, including Firefox, Safari and Opera. While those latter three don’t fluctuate much during the week, Chrome peaks on the weekends and dips on the weekdays, while the opposite happens with IE. This suggests people are more likely using IE on their work computers and Chrome on their home PCs. “Whether Chrome can take the lead in the browser wars in the long term remains to be seen, however the trend towards Chrome usage at weekends is undeniable,” StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen in a statement. “At weekends, when people are free to choose what browser to use, many of them are selecting Chrome in preference to IE.”" 'via Blog this'

Indian Mobile Operators Are Priming their Networks for Mobile Broadband Uptake, Says ABI Research
Indian Mobile Operators Are Priming their Networks for Mobile Broadband Uptake, Says ABI Research - MarketWatch:
"There are a number of challenges to kick-starting the Indian mobile broadband market. The large landmass and population are two substantial reasons, but India’s low average monthly revenue per user (US$3-5) also constrains cash flow to fund infrastructure investments. Indian operators are executing a number of initiatives: -- Offloading their capital and operating expenditure-intensive base station towers to tower management companies. -- Forging relationships with not just Nokia, Samsung, and LG, but also lower cost handset manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE, Micromax, and G’Five. -- Repackaging their data plans into more affordable, lower-tier options. -- Introducing not just low-cost tablets, but also 3G data plans. -- Encouraging “local” apps developers to create “local” software apps and content."

"In India, the diagnostics sector has been witnessing immense progress in innovative competencies and credibility. Technological advancements and higher efficiency systems are taking the market to new heights. The use of advanced and cutting-edge technologies in understanding a disease prognosis has further strengthened the sophistication level of participants in the sector. According to our latest report, diagnostic medical imaging is a rapidly growing field in the Indian diagnostics market, which has shown tremendous growth and high profits. While nuclear imaging is the fastest growing segment within the field, diagnostic lab services is another important division that has seen an increase in the number of unorganized players. Why has India become the world's top arms buyer?
Why has India become the world's top arms buyer?:
"India has replaced China as the world's largest arms buyer, accounting for 10 per cent of all arms purchases during the past five years, a Swedish research group said. India purchased some $12.7 billion in arms, 80 per cent of that from Russia, during 2007-2011, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). China's arms purchases during that time were $6.3 billion, 78 per cent of which came from Russia.
India has tried, but failed, to create a sizable domestic manufacturing industry for weapons or even basic military goods, while China has increased production of defence supplies. About 75 per cent of India's weapons purchases came from imports during 2007-11, said Laxman Kumar Behra of the Institute of Defense Studies and Analysis, a government-funded research organisation." Oil prices a serious concern for India: Nischal Maheshwari, Head of Research, Edelweiss Securities
Oil prices a serious concern for India: Nischal Maheshwari, Head of Research, Edelweiss Securities - The Economic Times:
"ET Now: The April reading at 90 against the reading of 95 in the fourth quarter of the current financial year, would you view this as a one off or would you say that this is indicative of what the beginning of the next financial year might look like? Nischal Maheshwari: Yes, this should be viewed as a beginning of the next financial year, but I would not be really worried because some amount of volatility is always there and one or two factors drive it down or up. Unless we will see a downward trend from 95 to 90 at least for the next two months, I would really be worried. "

In Patna, a low-cost private school revolution
"New Delhi: The government may not agree but a low-cost and affordable private school revolution seems to be taking shape in Patna, although a bulk of it involves institutions that are not recognised by the government. A study by education think-tank India Institute and the UK’s Newcastle University found 1,574 schools in Bihar’s capital city. Of these, 21% were government-run and the rest were private schools—at least three-fourths of which offered low-cost or affordable education."
