"YSR Congress chief and MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is among 13 people booked by CBI in an alleged disproportionate assets case, on Monday said the action smacked of "dirty politics" and claimed he is being made a scapegoat. A day after CBI filed the chargesheet against him and 12 others, Reddy, the Lok Sabha MP from Kadapa, regretted that attempts are being made to malign his father and late Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy who was killed in a helicopter crash.

In its chargesheet, CBI accused Jagan Reddy of getting investments of several crores from firms into his own business as part of quid-pro-quo when his father was the chief minister. "Today, I am being made a scapegoat just because my father is no longer alive...You are actually trying to malign someone who is no longer alive...This is dirty politics," Reddy told TV channels in his first reaction to the chargesheet."

Indian student sentenced for 14 months in jail for bribery scam - Economic Times:

"MELBOURNE: An Indian student was sentenced to 14 months in jail for his involvement in a bribery scam under which the English test scores used for granting Australian permanent residency and visas were falsified.

A local court in Perth yesterday sentenced Rajesh Kumar, who had pleaded guilty to 10 counts of bribery between November 2009 and June 2010. The court heard that Kumar became an intermediary in the scam and personally received between 32,000 dollars and 44,000 dollars."

" 0 inShare Share on Tumblr HYDERABAD: India, the second largest exporter of sugar in the world, has something to cheer about as a study of representative samples of sugar across the country has shown no detectable presence of� pesticides in the sweet commodity.

This comes as sweet news to the industry in the wake of apprehensions and allegations by cola companies that pesticide residues in the sugar used by them contaminated their bottled beverages. Researchers from Hyderabad -based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) tested 27 samples collected from different states in the country for the presence of organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides.

According to the findings of the study published in the Food Chemistry journal, the levels indicated the absence of pesticides including alpha endosulfan and beta endosulfan, chlorpyrifos and DDT analysed at 0.1 microgram per kilogram level."

"London: In a nondescript suburb south of London, tucked away behind a big hospital, Paul Workman and fellow scientists are celebrating victory in the "World Cup" of cancer drug research for their work in discovering a stream of new medicines. But the win is bitter-sweet. One of the new drugs behind the coveted prize from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has been deemed too costly to use in state-run British hospitals like the one next door.

It is a stark example of the pricing crisis now facing cancer medicines across the globe. In developed and developing countries alike, patients and governments are struggling to pay for modern drugs that are revolutionizing cancer care but may cost tens of thousands of dollars a year for each patient.

"It`s very frustrating," says Workman, who heads up the drug discovery unit at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), which is funded in large part by charities. What is needed, he believes, is a new model that takes advantage of the highly specific nature of modern targeted therapies to slash drug development timelines and costs."

India's 3rd research base in Antarctica begins - Hindustan Times:

"India has done a soft launch of its third research station in Antarctica's Larsemann Hills region, considered as one of the few geological windows into the history of the continent. "The construction is over. We are running it on trial basis. The winter team is there carrying out tests on various equipment and systems," Shailesh Nayak, secretary, ministry of Earth Sciences, said.

The formal launch of the research station - Bharti - is expected in November when it is summer time in the icy continent. The research station would address the growing urge in the Indian scientific community for exploring deeper and wider areas of Antarctica for better understanding of the vast continent, said Rajesh Asthana, the leader of the 15-member team, at a brief inauguration ceremony at Larsemann Hills on March 18.

The station is situated at an unnamed promontory of land between the Strornes and Broknes peninsulas in the Larsemann Hills region of East Antarctica. The natural topography is a rocky granite hill towering approximately 90 meters above sea level."

Air India union renew strike threat, seek PM's help on delay in salaries - Business Today:

"Air India (AI) employees, who have threatened to strike work from April 2, for delay in salaries and allowances have sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention. The decision to go ahead with the proposed strike came after the eight unions-of the total 13 registered unions- failed to secure any firm proposal from the AI management for clearing their dues at a meeting on Wednesday, the third such engagement in a week . Shockingly, the employees have not been paid since December.

The AI unions have called for immediate intervention of the PM to resolve the situation failing which they have threatened to go ahead with the strike. "We will no longer be able to bear this agony, which has been thrust upon us. Therefore, we reiterate that if the management continues to withhold our legitimate salaries, we will not be able to discharge our duties from April 2. We appeal to you for your kind and urgent intervention to resolve the situation," the unions said in a joint memorandum to the PM. "

"New Delhi/Islamabad, Apr 2: Against the backdrop of improving bilateral ties, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to come on a personal visit to India later this month to pay his respects at the revered Sufi shrine at Ajmer Sharif.

Zardari has conveyed to the Indian government his desire to visit the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer, said official sources in New Delhi. The visit is expected to take place around April 8, official sources said.

The request was received by the Indian external affairs ministry a couple of days ago and the government is considering it, the sources said. In Islamabad, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar Sunday that said

Zardari's trip was initially planned to be a private visit, but did not rule out the possibility that it could turn into an official one."

India proposes to take US to WTO on visa fee hike - The Times of India:

"NEW DELHI: India proposes to take the US to the WTO disputing 'discrimination' against the Indian software companies which are being asked to pay higher H-1B and L1 visa fee for their employees than the American firms for bringing more number of skilled immigrants to their country at lesser costs.

"The Department of Commerce is working to build up a case of WTO violations by US resulting from the implementation of the visa fee hike," an official said.

He said the discrimination was the result of the US Border Security Act of 2010. India has been raising its concern for the last 18 months. The law, also known as the James Zadroga Act, substantially increased the fees for H-1B and L1 categories of visas for applicants which employ more than 50 persons in the US or have more than 50% of their employees admitted on non-immigrant visas (the 50:50 rule).
