Militant who targeted Australian nuclear plant held in France
"PARIS: A French Muslim convert convicted in 2007 for planning an attack on an Australian nuclear plant is one of the suspected militants being held for questioning after a series of raids throughout France, a police source said on Saturday.
Willy Brigitte was arrested on Friday at his home in Asnieres, a northwestern suburb of Paris.
Authorities found no weapons but seized his computer and a mobile phone, the source told Reuters.
The crackdown followed a pledge by President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is three weeks away from the first round of presidential elections, to rid France of radical Islamists.

MicroRNAs offer new hope against obesity and diabetes
MicroRNAs offer new hope against obesity and diabetes:
ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) — Hunger has always threatened humankind. This makes it unsurprising that human bodies attempt to store all surplus nourishment in adipose tissue. In developed countries, this life-saving craving is turning into a problem and obesity -- adiposity -- is turning into a danger. Why, though, does excess fat the body ill? How does fat trigger diabetes? And can these superfluous fat reserves be turned into warmth and just as well burnt?
Marcel Scheideler from the Technical University of Graz has examined these questions intensively in a particular project of the Austrian genomic research programme GEN-AU; and he discovered that microRNAs are a part of the solution. It has been known for a while that these molecules, which are produced by the human body, play an important role in gene regulation and thus contribute to cancer genesis. Indeed, this is a research area to which Scheideler has already made valuable contributions as part of an interdisciplinary research team (1). The fact that microRNAs could also contribute to obesity and diabetes, however, is a new insight, to which Scheideler and his team have contributed significantly recently (2-4). The topic of RNA and adiposity thus played an important role at the current conference "9 Years of the GEN-AU Programme" in Innsbruck. The participating research teams were managed by the local Innsbruck company CEMIT.

Beauty Research: Avene Solutions for Sensitive Skin:
"Beauty Research, a beauty blogging web site, recommends the French beauty brand Avene to its readers Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) March 30, 2012 Beauty Research, a beauty blogging web site, recently recommended Avene products to its readers with sensitive skin. Avene is a French beauty brand that formulates all of its products with thermal spring water, specially sourced from France.
For centuries, those with skin issues have relied on natural thermal spring water to address problems such as eczema, psoriasis and other types of irritation. Thermal water is rich in minerals and calms the skin when added to personal care products. "Soothing skin care products are key in helping sensitive skin captivate a little bit of normalcy.
In order to treat certain indications (for instance anti-aging or acne) you've got to get your sensitive skin into more of a normal state of balance because so many products that are effective and results-oriented can also be a tad irritating; thus resulting in a vicious cycle for those with sensitive skin in the first place." - Writes Karen of Beauty Research"

CO2 hidden in ocean during Ice Age
CO2 hidden in ocean during Ice Age:
"Berlin: Much of the CO2 was hidden in the ocean, which explains its low atmosphere concentration during the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago, researchers say. Climate researchers from the Universities of Bern (Switzerland) and Grenoble (France) and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Germany) found this close connection between CO2 and temperature has existed over the past 800,000 years.
"We have now been able to identify processes in the ocean which are connected to the observed rise in CO2," said Jochen Schmitt, from Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Bern, who led the study, the journal Science reported. "

India, Brazil sign six pacts after BRICS summit:
"New Delhi: A day after the BRICS summit, India and Brazil on Friday decided to step up efforts to push the UN reforms and signed half a dozen pacts in areas ranging from science and biotechnology to cultural exchanges.
Reinforcing the BRICS' position on Syria and Iran, the two countries also called for resolving the festering crisis in West Asia through dialogue.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday held wide-ranging talks with Dilma Rousseff, the first woman Brazilian president who began her state visit to India on Friday after the conclusion of the BRICS summit.
After the talks, the two sides signed six pacts in areas ranging from closer cooperation in science and biotechnology to cultural exchanges. Under a signature Brazilian initiative Science Without Borders, the two sides inked a pact that envisages placement of Brazilian students and young researchers in India. It will be funded by Brazil.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Hundreds of students staged an angry protest outside Rio's military club as retired senior officers marked 48 years since the coup that ushered in two decades of military dictatorship.
The demonstrators, including many relatives of victims of the 1964-1985 dictatorship that left 400 people presumed dead or missing in Brazil, on Thursday chanted "murderers," "torturers" or "cowards, we are waiting for the truth."
They shouted insults at the elderly retired officers as they emerged from their luncheon meeting in central Rio and made their way to a nearby subway station, protected by a police cordon.
Angela Barroso, a retired lawyer, told AFP that while she was a law student in 1968, she was arrested at her university, tortured and jailed for five months.
"You never forget torture," she said.
Unlike other South American countries that had right-wing dictatorships and political abuses and killings during the 1960s-80s -- Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile -- Brazil has never put the perpetrators on trial.

Indian talent would be most sought after in near future
Coimbatore,Mar31 (PTI) India is making significant headway in emerging areas like biotechnology, nanotechnology, IT and computing and these achievements are made despite technology denial regimes and lack of high quality infrastructure, a top scientist said today. Demographic advantage with more than 55 per cent of the population in the age group of 18-35 has to be put to maximum use, R M Vasagam, Padmashri awardee and Chairman, National Design and Research Forum, Bangalore, said. A day will soon come when Indian talent is most sought after in cutting edge research in engineering and technologies, he said, delivering the convocation address at the Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore. "While we aspire for number one position in many areas, the achievements are in few areas like dairy, jewellery and textile and garments," he said, adding, India was transitioning to become a fountain head of new knowledge and also emerge as a global hub of manuacturing. "We should be proud of the fact that more than one million engineers come out every year.., he said. "It is worth noting that South Korea has about 284 engineers out of 1,000 graduates, 230 in Japan and 210 in US, but in India it is hardly two," Vasagam said. India is the faster growing mobile market exceeding 900 million connections and 200 million TVs and producing more that 1,300 films in a year, he said.
