Call to make Tamil compulsory subject for Indian students
"KUALA LUMPUR (March 25, 2012): Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz today proposed that Tamil be made a compulsory subject for Indian students in national schools to prevent erosion of the language in the younger generation.
He said this would ensure that they will not only be able to speak in the language but also read Tamil publications as well.
At present, Tamil students can only speak in their mother tongue but cannot read in that language, he said, adding that this indirectly had an influence on the publication of works in Tamil.
"This issue should be given consideration or it will be difficult to address the shortage of works in Tamil," he told reporters after closing the "Mari Membaca 1Malaysia: Ore Malaysia Vaasika Vaarunggal" reading programme, here."
